A Day at the Beach
February 8, 2004

We took the girls to the Wedge, an infamous Newport Beach body surfing spot. The water was flat calm today so there were no surfers, only sightseers and people (like us) with dogs. A long stone jetty sticks out at right angles to the beach. On one side is the beach; on the other is the channel leading out to open water.

Rainbow seriously studies the sailing technique of the local yachtsmen.

Not to be outdone, Starlet allows the passing parade to view her in all her beauty.

Starlet as Florence of Arabia, waiting for us to follow.

After a long run on the beach, Starlet takes a break and strikes a pose befitting the Queen of the Sands.

Rainbow loves the gnarled old trees that guard the jetty...

...and unabashedly stares at anyone who strikes her fancy.

Starlet is really above it all, in a grand, almost-grownup dog sort of way.

Running on the beach is tiring work and Rainbow yawns to prove it. Starlet refuses to notice. Both are happiest in mommy's arms

Thomas in the surf with Rainbow. Just before this was taken, he and Rainbow ran through a wave and hilarity ensued.

Starlet and Rainbow Get Acquainted
February 1, 2004

Has this puppy got personality, or what? Notice how she looks straight into the camera and gives it some attitude, while Starlet looks on approvingly.

The calm before the storm. Puppies looking for mischief.

Rainbow has lost no time in chatting up Blossom, who is still suspucious of yet another furry, four-legged family member.

Starlet takes a moment to let everyone see just what a looker she is.

This is the current favorite game of Starlet and Rainbow: tug-of-war. This game can be played legally with their strap balls, or illegally with mommy's stockings.

These games can go into overtime.

Nothing like pancakes and maple syrup after playing.
(Rainbow prefers to eat inside her house.)

After a long bout of tugging, growling, and wrestling and a couple plates of pancakes, it's time for a nap.

A serious nap.

Rainbow Arrives

Rainbow has made herself right at home, taking up residence in the faux leopard doghouse that was a present from her Auntie Julie Strain. In case you just tuned in, Rainbow is a rare Blue Miniature Pinscher. She has gorgeous tan markings and, so help me, the skin on her tummy is baby blue! (Her Native American name is "Amitola" which means "Rainbow".)

Here Rainbow tackles Starlet's special slipper. (If you don't know what's special about it, watch the video!)

Rainbow is still a little lonesome for her littermates, so she gets to sleep in bed for the time being.

Rainbow is a prodigous sleeper. She gets up late, goes to bed early, and takes naps in between.

Here's Rainbow napping on top of a boot that's almost the same color.
