Justice Howard is not into what she calls "wimp photography." "I want my photographs to be like a slap in the face, to rattle around in your brain pan for a while and take up residency there," she says. While Justice's work has been compared to Newton and Mapplethorpe, it has its own striking style. "Justice's photograpy is boldly glamorous," Mamie says. "Her style is akin to George Hurrell's from the days of the movie studio portrait photographer. George photographed me many times. It's like Justice has taken the torch from artists like Hurrell and is carrying it into the new century. She's pushing out her own limits, taking the art form in her direction. I can't wait to see what she'll do next. I can't wait until she shoots me again."
The meeting of Mamie and Justice on their respective sides of the camera is a true event, some of the results of which you will find below. There will be more to come.
